Summer 2016 upDATER

Dater Dater families,

I hope this message finds everyone well and enjoying these long, relaxing days of summer. Around this time I always send out the Summer edition of my monthly newsletter, the upDATER to say hello to our returning fifth grade families and warmly welcome our incoming fourth grade families.

It has been a busy summer at Dater School and around the Ramsey School District. Many teachers have engaged in professional development throughout the summer and are working hard to update our existing curriculum and programs. This professional development included a curriculum writing institute focused on creating interdisciplinary Humanities units, updating Balanced Literacy units, and developing new Mathematics units focused on developing students as problem solvers with a deep conceptual understanding. Many Dater teachers also attended a co-teaching training as we expand this instructional practice during the upcoming year.

We also continued the process of updating our report card.  Last summer a group of teachers worked to create a draft of a standards-based report card. This draft was revised throughout the year and this summer a larger committee of teachers gathered to develop grading benchmarks to accompany the report card.  This new standards-based report card will be implemented at Dater for the upcoming school year.  There will be much more information provided about the new report cards at Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 PM and the first PTO Meeting on Friday, September 16 at 9 AM.

Your child's class assignment will be posted on the Parent Portal on Tuesday, August 30. You will need your Parent Portal log-in information to access the class assignment.  This is the same information that you have used in the past to view report cards.  On this date, I will send you another email letter to let you know that the assignments have been posted and instructions on how you can access them.  This communication will also include other important Back to School information and links.
The first day of school for students is Tuesday, September 6.  In the meantime, I wish you another wonderful month of summer relaxation with family and friends.  I look forward to working with you to make 2016-2017 a great year for all of the fourth and fifth graders in Ramsey.
