Welcome to our class
I am excited to be working with you and your children this year! The goal for my fifth graders is to prepare them to face a complex society and provide students with the knowledge and skills needed in order for them to become independent, confident and responsible individuals. I hope to build the students' self-esteem and encourage a learning environment that promotes higher-level thinking.

Unit Updates: Unit 5
Reading- This month in reading students will be working with a partner to read about a topic of interest to build our understanding and knowledge. We will also be looking at nonfiction signposts such as word choice, extreme and absolute language, numbers and statistics, quoted words, and contrasts and contradictions. These signposts help us look past author’s point of view, and biases so that we can identify facts and used them to make our own conclusions about topics. As always students are expected to read 40 minutes each night.
Writing- In this unit students will be creating a persuasive opinion essay. Students will be working on forming a strong thesis, brainstorming clear reasons and identifying various kinds evidence from articles about their chosen topic.
Social Studies- We are wrapping up our Ancient Egypt unit with a performance task. Students will look at various Ancient Egyptian technologies that still impact our world today. Then they will explore the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website to identify an artifact that represents this technology. Finally, they will examine the artifact through the lens of our 4 social scientist hats.
Math- We have begun our decimals unit and are currently working on a digital notebook that contains information on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals using the concrete, pictorial, and abstract strategies.
Social Studies- We are using the research skills we have learned in Humanities to learn about the 4 Earth Systems: Atmosphere, Biosphere, Geosphere, Hydrosphere. The students will be researching one of these systems and using that research to create a website dedicated to Earth's Systems.
