In this reading unit, we will continue to develop and revise theories about subjects of biographies. Students are using partner conversation to deepen their understanding of biography books. Students are doing a nice job on their thinking and jotting about their biographies to help deepen their understanding. I'm teaching whole group mini lessons, independent reading of "just right" biographies, conferring and read aloud strategy lessons to achieve these goals for your child.
In this writing unit, we are generating focused ideas for biography research. They are planning focus, structured writing from research. Soon they will be eaborating using text features and details. We will continue to practice grammar and conventions to convey ideas clearly through the writer's research project.
In this integrated social studies unit, we have begun investigating the American Revolution. Students are historians investigating the past, what events happened that led to the Revolutionary War and who the leaders and groups were that influenced the creation of New Jersey. They are learning about different perspectives of relationships between the colonies and Britain. Your child will then learn about the importance of the Declaration of Independence and why it was created. Finally, the kids will learn about key battles that were fought New Jersey and why New Jersey is considered the Crossroads of the Revolutionary War.
Students are still working on their historical skills within our integrated unit. They are analyzing documents and photographs and using evidence to form ideas theories about different conflicts. They have been predicting and inferring to draw conclusions based on different modalities. Also, the students have been learning about how perspective informs people's responses, choices and motivations as well as still making real life connections using evidence in analyzing text. They are learning how American Identiy changes over time.
