In order to help ensure the security and safety of our students, all perimeter doors are locked from 7:50 am to 3:05 pm. Parents and visitors are required to sign in at the main office before entering the school facility. During school hours, visitors may only enter through the front doors (push the buzzer at the far right). You will be given a visitor's name tag, which will authorize your visit. Thank you for your cooperation.
Crisis Committee and Emergency Procedures
Eric Smith School has a Crisis Committee that oversees school emergency operations. Members of the Committee include the principal and assistant principal, team leaders (teachers), school social worker, nurse, guidance counselors, secretaries, head custodian, parent association vice-president, and Bryan Lyman, who is a police officer and coordinator of emergency operations for the Ramsey Police Department.
Smith School has an "Emergency Operations Plan" that outlines emergency procedures for various emergency situations. Responsibilities are assigned to specific staff members who execute on these procedures. Specific procedures are in place for building evacuations, site evacuations, and lock-down. A "Staff Crisis Management Manual" provides procedures for situations including chemical spills, bomb threats, weapons, and bio-chemical threats, among others. The emergency plan is maintained as a confidential document to prevent abuse of procedures.
State law requires two fire evacuations each month. An assessment by the Ramsey Fire Department occurs in October. Smith School conducts a full site evacuation and a lock-down drill in the fall and spring under the supervision of the Ramsey Police Department.
